Most pergolas sold as custom are configurable rather than bespoke. You choose from a size chart, a colour card and a list of options, and the frame itself is a standard product. That is a perfectly good way to buy one, and it is not the same thing as having a structure built to your drawing.

This list sorts on that distinction. The question is not which brand looks most expensive, but which will actually build to a dimension that is not in a catalogue, and what each one publishes that a buyer can verify before committing.

What "custom" means at the top of this market

Three things separate a made-to-order structure from a configurable one.

• Will they build a non-standard bay? Most premium names work in fixed modules and add posts to cover a longer run. A made-to-order maker cuts the bay you need.

• What is the minimum order? One unit, or a dealership agreement. This decides whether a one-off project is even possible.

• What do they publish? Rotation range, warranty split by component, coating thickness, drainage throughput. Luxury pricing does not guarantee any of these are on the page.

Made to order at one unit, and the most complete published specification here

A Chinese factory that builds to drawing instead of to a stocked catalogue, which is what puts it first on the criterion this list uses. Odd bays, non-standard spans and mixed configurations are ordinary work rather than a special request, and the minimum order is a single unit, so a one-off villa or restaurant terrace is viable without a dealership.

It is also the most transparent entry on specification. It is the only maker in this five that publishes rotation range, structure warranty, motor warranty, coating thickness, salt spray hours, ultraviolet hours and drainage throughput together.

Published: rotation 0 to 180 degrees, the widest range here. Frames in 6063-T5 aluminium with posts at 150, 135, 120 and 100 millimetres, or 100 millimetres in steel. Structure 5 years, motor 3 years, stated separately. Coating is a passivated ZAM base under roughly 80 microns of powder, at 168 salt spray hours and 100 ultraviolet hours. Drainage throughput 0.02 to 0.04 litres per second per square metre. Rated to 120 km/h with the blades closed and 120 kg per square metre of snow.

Check: the warranty is the shortest of the five. Ask this or any luxury pergola manufacturer whether five years is a floor or a ceiling, and get the lead time quoted with the incoterm, because an ex-works figure stops at the factory gate.

Made to measure, with the deepest published performance data in the category

The Belgian maker most often specified on architect-led projects in Europe, working made to measure within its own system. It publishes more measured performance than anyone else here, including drainage throughput, which almost no competitor states at all.

Published: wind 120 km/h, load 110 kg per square metre, structure 10 years, paint 10 years.

Check: the conditions are as detailed as the data. Paint drops from 10 years to 5 within 500 metres of the coast, and the 15-year colour and gloss warranty applies only with annual paid maintenance and is void in coastal and polluted areas, and void on castings and mounting brackets.

3. Azenco

The strongest published warranty, and the clearest answer on rain

Now part of Hunter Douglas, with manufacturing in France and Florida. The R-Blade closes gapless with a dual-walled blade section, which is an engineering answer to the rain question instead of a claim about it, and the commercial terms are the best stated of any brand in this list.

Published: rotation 0 to 160 degrees. Structure 15 years, motors 5 years. Engineered to 195 mph, with Miami-Dade approval behind it.

Check: the headline calls it a limited lifetime warranty while the terms say fifteen and five. It sells through dealers only, so a single project goes through a local installer.

4. StruXure

For projects that have to clear a plan review

The premium American name, owned by AZEK since 2022, and the one most often written into United States specifications. Installed pricing sits at the top of the market, roughly $150 to $200 per square foot, and what you are buying at that level is certification and a network that will stand behind the install.

Published: rotation up to 155 degrees in StruXure's own material. ICC certified, rated to 150 mph.

Check: dealer pages routinely quote 170 degrees for the same products. Confirm the figure for your model in writing, and note that no warranty split is published.

5. Solisysteme

French manufacture with verifiable provenance

Founded in 1998, now a Burgermeister brand, and widely credited with originating the bioclimatic pergola. Origine France Garantie certification sits behind the manufacturing claim, which is unusually specific in a market where "designed in" often stands in for "made in".

Published: aluminium 10 years, parts and mechanisms 3 years.

Check: rotation appears as 145 degrees in some material and 160 in others, so get the figure for the exact model on your quotation.

Side by side

Three of five publish a separate figure for the motor, and on an adjustable roof that is the component with the shortest service life. Two publish no rotation figure at all.

Three questions before you sign

• Is this built to my dimension or assembled from modules? Ask for the bay size on the drawing, not the footprint. A structure covered by two standard modules and an extra post is a different product from one cut to length.

• What are the separate terms for structure, finish and motor? Three figures. Every maker has them, and only some print them.

• What is the maximum clear span at my snow and wind load? In writing, before the deposit. Span decides where the posts land, and posts decide how the terrace works.

At this level the products are all competent. The differences that matter are in what each company will commit to in writing, and that is the part a buyer can check before spending anything.
